Welcome to freshman English! This course serves as an introduction to literature and composition. It consists of the study of short stories, novels, drama, poetry and essays. Grammar, usage, and vocabulary are also major points of focus in this course.
In addition to the literature text, you will read at least five novels. These novels will tentatively consist of: Flowers for Algernon, Of Mice and Men, The Old Man and the Sea, A Separate Peace, and Romeo and Juliet. The writing component of this course will be integrated into the reading program whenever possible. You will learn to use various styles of essays. There will also be weekly vocabulary activities and quizzes. In addition, you will learn test-taking skills and practice for the English portion of the state-mandated Ohio Graduation Test.
