ADV. Computer Graphics Schedule

2007/2008 SCHEDULE The schedule for Advanced Computer Graphics students is simply a reflection of  how professional designers get their schedules; essentially, on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.  Many assignments, or "work orders" will be handed out and it will be up to  the student to determine where the project will go.  The main idea is for each student to work within a given criteria, but to fully demonstrate both their creativity and in the final execution.

The schedule will be updated on a bi-weekly basis.  Parents may obtain further information on the plans for the entire year simply by emailing me at twoolery@moeller.org

THE PRINTED PIECE WILL BE WORTH 50 POINTS.

PROJECT #2

ASSIGNMENT #2:  RANDOM ALBUM ASSIGNMENT

RANDOM SELECTION ALBUM DESIGN

The purpose of this assignment is to begin the “design studio experience” in which you may or may not know much about your client; yet, by virtue of the research process, you will become better acquainted with exactly who/what your client is all about.  For example, if student A is going to design an album for a garage-rock band from Detroit, he MUST first review the Detroit music scene, other bands from that area, other bands from that genre, the band’s key influences, what fonts to use, what colors, etc.

Another example.  Let’s say that a design agency picks up two new clients; specifically, Jay-Z and The White Stripes.  Now, before they launch into the design production, they must research exactly what these two artists are about.  If Jay-Z says, “I’m naming my record The Black Album” do you really think that the design agency will waster their time going through various colors of blue?  Perhaps, but I highly doubt it.  What if you are part of a design team that is working on a new White Stripes album titled Elephant and their representatives tell you that the design should reflect upon the “heaviness” of the music.  What do they mean by that?  You will need to be prepared for even the most obscure of requests and ,trust me, I won’t shy away from challenging you.

SO, each of you will randomly select a letter A-F.  Included with this letter will be a description of a fictional band/artist that you will be designing an album for.  You may look at your artist/band’s profile and be instantaneously psyched, or you may feel both challenged and/or disappointed.  However you feel is irrelevant.  What IS relevant is how you deal with the process.  This is what graphic design is all about.  This is why you are taking an advanced course.

Look, I may not be the biggest fan of, say, Toby Keith.  In fact, his music may bore me to tears.  However, if I am working with a design agency that lands him as a client, I look at it as his CD design will add to my bank account.  Now, if I found out that the living band members of Led Zeppelin were reuniting and my agency was designing promotional work for them, it would be the thrill of a lifetime.  The paycheck would be an added bonus!

FOR THIS ASSIGNEMNT:

You MUST first gather information on all that you will need to know about this artist/band.  Once you have gathered your research, you will type a one-page description of how you plan to depict this artist.

ONE-PAGE DESCRIPTION CRITERIA:

Double-spaced, 12 point, legible type.  Include your name, class, and due date in either the top-left, or top-right corner.  Insert your paper in a clear, protective sheet.

DUE DATE:  WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5TH and THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6th  (One-page description only)

Once you have discussed your design strategy with Mr. Woolery, you will then move on to the design process.  YOU MAY BEGIN DESIGN WORK BEFORE SEPTEMBER 5th, but plan on having to do several revisions before submitting the final design.

ALBUM DESIGN CRITERIA:

You will create five variations of each of the following:

CD case Front Cover (X5)  4.75” X 4.75”

CD case Back Cover (X5)  4.75” X 4.75”

CD Design (X5)  4.75” X 4.75”

Promotional Poster (X5) 11” X 17”

COLOR: 2-3 DOMINANT COLORS (a non-dominant color would be a flesh/skin color)

TYPE:  NO MORE THAN THREE DIFFERENT FONTS

IMAGES:  MUST BE ORIGINAL, DO NOT COPY PHOTOS FROM THE INTERNET UNLESS YOU HAVE RECEIVED PERMISSION (show me) OR THEY ARE COPYRIGHT-FREE (cut-and-paste the web address(s), print, and submit to me with the rest of your variations)

All of these variations will be evaluated (5 points each, 100 total) on your computer (print screen or PowerPoint formats):

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27TH and FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH

FINAL PRINTED WORK AND PRESENTATIONS:

YOUR FINAL DESIGN WORK WILL BE PRESENTED TO THE CLASS ON THE FOLLOWING DATES:

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11TH AND FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12TH

*EACH PRESENTATION WILL LAST APPROXIMATELY FIVE MINUTES IN LENGTH.

*IN ADDITION TO YOUR PRINTED WORK, YOU WILL PREPARE A 5-10 SLIDE POWERPOINT PRESENTATION DESCRIBING BOTH YOUR PARTICULAR ARTIST AND YOUR DESIGN WORK.  FOR EXAMPLE,

“I CHOSE THE FONT ‘IMPACT’ BECAUSE IT IS A THICKER FONT WHICH HELPS TO DEPICT THE LOOK I WANTED FOR THE ALBUM TITLE.”

IF YOU WISH, YOU MAY PREPARE A 5-10 PAGE WEBSITE FOR YOUR BAND/ARTIST (A WEBSITE SIMULATION WILL BE FINE)

MAKE SURE TO PUT ALL PRINTS ON 8.5” x 11” GLOSSY PAPER IN CLEAR, PLASTIC SHEETS.

I WILL PROVIDE NEWSPRINT TO PROTECT THE 11” x 17” PRINTS

GOOD LUCK!

PROJECT 7

OVERVIEW:

For this assignment, you will be in charge of re-designing several aspects of a section of  Royal Street, located in the French Quarter, New Orleans’ oldest and most historic neighborhood.  During the catastrophic Hurricane Katrina onslaught in late-August 2005, the French Quarter itself endured minimal damage.  Ostensibly, it would seem that other areas of New Orleans (which were damaged more severely damaged) should receive the most treatment in terms of any re-designing.  Yet, with the French Quarter being the heart of the city of New Orleans, and perhaps the cultural apex of America, it is there that the focus should be on creating a symbol of triumph, something that will serve as a testament to the 1,836 people who died because of Katrina (and subsequent flooding).

THE PURPOSE:

A visual re-creation of the section of Royal Street that begins at the intersection of St. Louis and ends at St. Philip.  The goal is to not simply re-create the current buildings, but to add your own architectural ideas (both exterior and interior)to at least FIVE of the buildings.  For example, if you were to lead someone through your SketchUp rendering, you should be able to take that person through the interior of at least five of the buildings.  You will be re-designing the buildings on both sides of the streets.  I have provided you with ample resources to find images of the buildings that occupy the section of Royal St from St. Louis to St. Peter. Keep in mind that other notable geographic landmarks (such as Jackson Park) will be (depending on the view) in the distant background.

GETTING STARTED:

  • Create a Favorites folder and name it French Quarter.  You will add all of the links into this folder (for quick reference).
  • You need to research the French Quarter; specifically, the stretch of land on Royal St, beginning at St. Louis and ending at St. Philip.  Go to this site:
    • Scroll down and click on “explore our interactive map.”  Once you have looked over the map to find the section of Royal St (that you will be working on)

    • Once you have read this piece, you will then need to focus on the impending risk of hurricanes, and what can be done to defend a city against such natural threats.  I have provided you with an article that was written one month after Hurricane Katrina.  Read over this article and start to generate your own hypothesis for what could be done to prevent such disasters in the future.

  • Look over the current layout of Royal St.  The best place to start would be Google Earth.  If you haven’t downloaded it yet, start here:

http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html

  • Using Google Earth, you can get a close approximation to what you will need to do in Sketchup.  Also, refer to the map handout that I gave you.

  • Next, you should investigate some of the businesses on Royal St.  Check the following sites:

1.       http://www.inetours.com/New_Orleans/French_Quarter_History.html

Scroll down to where you see the images of buildings on Royal St

2.       http://www.quantumtour.com/entity/neworleans/

Try this one out.  It isn’t Royal St, but it gives you a glimpse of neighboring Bourbon St, and Jackson Square, and the riverfront views.

These link is here to provide you with an idea for the scale of your buildings.

3.       http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/louisiana-new-orleans-

      royalstreetcourtyard.html

This site will lead you to some interior views that may give you some

ideas for when you work on your interiors (remember, you have to

show the interiors of at least FIVE buildings).

4.       http://www.gofrenchantiques.com/pg/tour.html

This site provides the interior of an antique shop on Royal St.

*KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU ARE WORKING ON THE SECTION OF ROYAL ST, FROM ST. LOUIS TO ST. PHILIP.

*Once you have gotten this far, you are ready to start the process of

designing your buildings on this historic stretch of road in the French

       Quarter!

GOOD LUCK!

PROJECT 8

ADVANCED COMPUTER GRAPHICS 2007/2008

FINAL PROJECT

Here it is, finally the project completely defined by YOU the student.  I am most anxious to see where and how far you can take this.

Here are the due dates that you will need to be aware of:

A3 Seniors:  Wednesday, May 14th or Friday, May 16th

B1 Seniors:   Tuesday, May 13th or Thursday, May 15th

A3 Juniors:  Tuesday, May 20th or Thursday, May 22nd

B1 Juniors:   Wednesday, May 21st or Friday, May 23rd

A3 Sophomores:  Tuesday, May 27th or Thursday, May 29th

B1 Sophomores:   Wednesday, May 28th or Friday, May 30th

NOW, here is some food for thought.  If you have ever thought that I was a little harsh in evaluating something that you have done, that will pale in comparison to my reaction if you do very little or the work is obviously below an “Advanced” level.

You will have nearly six weeks (sophomores will have longer) to complete your finished work.

Here are some items that YOU MUST HAVE:

  • At least four prints (no larger than 8.5” X 11”) on glossy, inkjet paper
  • A two-page (double-spaced, Times New Roman font-size 12) description
  • Copyright proof of any images obtained from royalty-free websites

You may use Photoshop, Sketchup, Dreamweaver, Flash, or any other program that I approve of.

Essentially, your entire quarter grade shall be attributed to this assignment.  If you want an “A”, you are going to have to earn it.   I will be looking for the very best work that each one of you has ever done.  This is, in my opinion, THE single-most difficult task to complete.

FINALLY, don’t expect to have this finished before the due date.  You will be working on this every day, keeping in mind that only your best work will suffice for the final evaluation.  This assignment is the most substantial of all assignments, the one in which you HAVE to trust yourself on all levels.  Use your judgment wisely.
