Guitar Lab is a year long course designed for any student who wishes to learn the fundamentals of guitar technique as well as the basic principles of music. The class will take the student from beginning proper technique to a performance level. Students will be exposed to a full range of musical styles including Classical, Folk and Rock. All students will participate in recitals and have opportunities to explore the variety of styles they are exposed to.
Classroom Expectations
Since guitar lab incorporates a large group of musicians in one room with a variety of skill levels, it will be necessary for each student to be courteous and aware of the others when given individual practice time.
There is also the issue of the care of school instruments (guitars). Each student is responsible for the care of their assigned guitar. Understanding the need for good discipline in the room is important with regard to minimizing instrument breakage.
The basic premise of our classroom dynamic is that we want an environment where students feel safe to perform and be encouraged with a new skill. Students who move quickly on skills will be encouraged to assist those who may need more time, which is actually beneficial to both parties.
Grading
Students will be graded through:
- Guitar skill tests ( Proper Technique/Demonstrating musical understanding)
- Written Tests
- Class Preparation (includes having all materials)
- Homework
- Preparation of Performance Material
Performances
Performances include ANY solo or ensemble venue. This may include playing for an academic class to demonstrate the “Physics” of a guitar (for example), or a casual performance for the office staff. Students will receive credit for any performances that can be verified to my satisfaction.
*At the end of the year I will schedule a recital that the parents and friends may attend. This will be a casual environment which encourages the students to feel comfortable playing and sharing their music.
*Depending on progress earlier recitals may be scheduled.
