The Health and Physical Education Department at Archbishop Moeller High school is designed to put the Marianist principles of education into practice through courses that will help build the student’s body, mind, and spirit. It is the goal of the department to develop the whole person, so that he may enjoy life to the fullest and be prepared to live in the world of today and that of the future.
Health Philosophy
Health is the quality of life that enables an individual to be everything he can possibly be. It involves a dynamic interaction and interdependence among an individual’s physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. Health or wellness is reflected in a positive lifestyle. Thus, it is an active process in which an individual makes responsible decisions based upon accurate information, personal beliefs, and thoughtful considerations of their consequences.
Physical Education Philosophy
The physical education courses give the student an appreciation of physical fitness and well-being, along with an understanding of a variety of individual and team sports. Because contemporary society offers much more free time than our predecessors, it is important that students have healthful, leisure-time pursuits. The department stresses concepts, physical activities, and sports that have carry-over value. The faculty believes that students learn best by doing, so they provide classes that are more like a laboratory setting, both in content and concept. As such, they place a great deal of importance on student attendance and class participation.
