Role of the School Nurse

The primary role of the school nurse is to support student learning.  Optimal learning requires good health.  The nurse's office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The school nurse seeks to maintain, improve and promote the health of students by providing the following services:

-

Illness and injury assessments and interventions

-

Identification, assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of student health concerns

-

Screening for health factors impacting student education

-

Chronic disease management and education

-

Medication administration

-

Resource for health related issues and health education

Questions or concerns about student health issues can be directed to Cindy Neuhaus at 791-1680 ext. 200 or by e-mail to cneuhaus@moeller.org.

Screening Program

All freshman are screened for vision, hearing and postural problems during phys ed class.  The screening takes place in the fall and parents are notified by phone or mail if the student fails a particular screening.

Medication Policy

Providing medical care to a student is the responsibility of the parent and, whenever possible, it is preferred that students not be expected to take medication during school hours.  Realizing, however, that sometimes students require medication during the school day to maintain an optimal health and learning status, Archbishop Moeller seeks to cooperate fully with students, parents and the medical profession.  If it is necessary that medication be administered during school hours, the following procedures must be followed:

  1. A written permission for dispensing medication at school must be completed as specifically indicated below and submitted to the school nurse prior to the first administration of medication.  The administration of any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) without the order of a physician and the permission of the parent could be interpreted as practicing medicine and is prohibited by law.
  2. A PERMIT FOR ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION AT SCHOOL FORM must be completed by the physician and the parent.  This form provides the physician's order, parent permission and medical information required by law.  A separate form is required for each medication.  New forms must be submitted each school year and for each change in medication and dosage.  No medication will be administered until this order, permission and information are received by the school nurse.
  3. Dr. Stephen Beerman has authorized STANDING ORDERS for the administration of Tylenol and Ibuprofen only.  Written permission from a parent is required.  Please note: Tylenol and Ibuprofen are the only medications covered by Dr. Beerman's orders.  If your son frequently uses over-the-counter medications (cold and allergy and stomach preparations) and anticipates needing these medications during the school day, please have your family physician complete the appropriate authorization.  Tylenol and Ibuprofen are the only medications routinely stocked by the school nurse for student use.
  4. It is highly recommended that parents deliver all medication directly to Mrs. Neuhaus in the nurse's office.  Many of these medications are controlled substances and students should not have them in their possession at any time during the school day.
  5. PERMIT FORMS may be downloaded from this website or obtained from the school nurse.  One has also been included in the student handbook for copying purposes.
  6. Prescription medication, including refills, must be delivered to the nurse in the original container with the pharmacist's label showing the student's name, physician's name, date, name of medication, dosage directions and the prescription number.
  7. Students are responsible for reporting on time for medication(s). They will report to the nurse's office where all medications will be secured consistent with existing law.
  8. The school nurse and designated school personnel will administer all medication in accordance with safe practices and the physician's instructions.  To ensure the safety and health of all students, students may not carry or administer their own medication (with the exception of asthma inhalers, epi-pens, and insulin).  Only when the physician specifically documents a serious medical condition which necessitates immediate access to a particular medication (such as insulin, asthma inhaler, or epi-pen) may the medication be carried by the student.  The school and its employees assume no responsibility regarding any abuse or misuse of medication authorized by a physician to be carried by a student.
  9. When a student plans to attend a FIELD TRIP that requires the administration of medication during the field trip, it is the student's responsibility to notify the nurse as soon as possible.  The responsible teacher will be provided with the necessary medication along with instructions for its proper administration.
  10. When any medication has been discontinued, the parent will notify the school nurse of this change immediately.  The parent will pick up any remaining medication directly from the school nurse within one week of its discontinuance.  If such medication is not claimed by the parent, it will be appropriately discarded by the school nurse.
