Summer Service Trips

This summer we are offering eight different Summer Service Trips.  Please take a moment to look over your options.  Summer Service Trips are available to those in the class of 2009.  Application forms are due Thursday, March 6th to Mr. Gilronan.

Glenmary Farm   (July 5th - 11th)

This year we will be making the trip to Eastern Kentucky to Glenmary Farm for a week of service rehabing houses and other projects.  Participants also get to meet people from the area and learn from their stories.  This retreat-like immersion experience in Eastern Kentucky blends service, education, prayer, reflection and sharing in an environment of simple living.  The Glenmary Farm grows people! (From the Glenmary website).

Lima, Peru  (June 12th - 24th)

This is the second year for the Peru trip.  Students will be helping to reconstruct homes destroyed during the earthquake last year in Lima their first week.  Ther second week will include a trip to the norht of Peru to the Cusco and the ruins of Machu Picchu.  The students will be challenged to live simply and learn about a new culture at every turn.

Hurricane Relief Trip - Slidell, LA  (June 15th - 21st)

This is the third year for this service trip.  Students will go to Slidell, LA (outside New Orleans) to help build houses with East St. Tamminay Habitat for Humanity.  The evenings will include  educational components, cookouts, and other interesting adventures.  Students will be able to see first hand the damage done by Katrina but also the amazing spirit and faith of the people affected by it.

T.A.C.K.L.E.  (June 21st - 27th)

This is a Catholic Social Teaching work camp that is offered by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.  It is a long standing program that involves many students from different schools around the city.  It is a week long program that examines the root of poverty and injustice, charity and solidarity.  It challenges its participants to live simply, break down stereotypes, and become peacemakers.  T.A.C.K.L.E. aims to get students fired up about the Gospel message of peace and justice and gives its participants the skills to make a difference in the world.

Piedras Negras, Mexico  (June 27th - July 6th)

Students will work directly with the poor of the Mexican boarder town of Piedras Negras.  They will be housed in a non-denominational Christian Mission which provides service to the poor in the area.  The week includes service, education and prayer.  The students will also be able to take a trip to the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas on the way back.

Solsberry Hill, Indiana  (July 13th - 18th)

Moeller students pair up with students from Chaminade-Julienne Dayton for this trip.  Participants lived and work in community.  Projects include working with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter, learn about rural poverty at the Bloomington, IN foodbank, as well as other light construction projects.  Solsberry Hill is modeled after Nazareth Farm.

Marianist Urban Plunge, Cincinnati  (June 29th - July 5th)

The Marianist Urban plunge experience is an outstanding experience for those looking to learn about life in inner-city Cincinnati.  Students live in the RESTOC building in Over-the-Rhine and work each day in social agencies in the area.  During the week the students will perform service, live in community, learn about issues that face people in poverty, reflect on their experiences, and celebrate prayer and mass together.

Matthew 25: Ministries / Philippi, WV  (July 20th - 25th)

Matthew 25: Ministries supports the community of Philippi, WV, the poorest county in the state.  During each visit, Mt. 25: Ministries volunteers drop off basic necessities and supplies.  These items are "sold" to parents of children at Mt. Vernon Elementary who earn credits by volunteering at their school.   Also during each trip, the Mt. 25 Ministries group takes on some sort of construction or other school improvement project.  Participants spent time learning about the community, hearing guest speakers, relaxing and having recreational time at the college where they stayed.

Please take a moment to look at some of the reflection papers by the students who went on these various trips last year.
