Earning our reputation for excellence by Barry Borman

AthleticBooklet2.jpgOver the past 45 years, Moeller has earned  its reputation for excellence. We first began our rise to national fame in the early and mid-1970s in football. Over the next 15 years, up to about 1990, this tradition continued to grow, not only in football but in other athletic programs as well. We began earning national reputations in wrestling, baseball, and basketball.

In the next decade, Moeller’s national reputation grew to include the school’s academic and spiritual programs as well. In 2002 we became one of the first schools in the country to institute a laptop computer program for the entire school. That same year IBM recognized Moeller as one of the model schools in the nation in implementing computer education. During that same time, we were recognized by the Society of Mary’s evaluation team as “one of the finest examples of Catholic education in the nation.”

Last year, an exclamation point was added to our national reputation when 10 of our 14 athletic programs finished in the Top 10 in State Tournament competition. In addition, our football schedule was ranked as one of the most difficult high school football schedules in the country, and Moeller was ranked as the number one high school athletic program in the state by an online high school ranking organization.

Specifically, our athletic success was highlighted in the spring when the Moeller Volleyball Team captured its 4th State Title. Golf finished as State Runner-up, and wrestling finished 4th at the State Meet. Hockey and basketball made it to the State Semi-Final round, while baseball, bowling, and football were Regionalists (Top 8). Cross country runner Luke Beuerlein finished 3rd at the State Meet, and swimmer Matt Angilini finished 5th and 8th in his two events at the State Meet. Track finished 10th at the State Meet, with State Finalist finishes from Luke Beuerlein, Derico Murray, and Chris Walter.

This year promises continued success, for soccer has already won the GCL title, and golf has qualified for its 4th consecutive State Meet.

“Tradition” is often thought of as something that was established in the past, but I will tell you that   the Moeller Tradition is a dynamic and ever-growing one. Each athlete who wears a Moeller uniform feels the expectation of that tradition. This expectation encourages commitment and hard work, and through his personal dedication and success, he contributes to the strength of our reputation -- what we call the “Moeller Tradition.”

On behalf of our school, I express my sincere appreciation to all who have supported the ever-growing Moeller Tradition of excellence. I particularly thank those dedicated athletes-students of the past, as well as those who are yet to come, for you are the foundation of  the Moeller Tradition of Excellence.
