Primetime Season is about to begin!!   Who will win the McCarty Cup in 2019? Find out August 23rd!! Join us at Christ’s Church in Mason for this Primetime Cross Country Event.
Years ago, Jay McCarty, a parent of a Moeller cross country alum, had a vision. A passionate cross country fan, he wanted to host an event that would draw runners from all across the area, from junior high to the collegiate level.
While the Moeller “Primetime” Invitational is open to high schools and middle schools only, one can imagine how proud McCarty would be today to see the consistent turnout of young runners and parents each year to this Primetime event on a late August Friday night.
While the event started in 2012 on the former Bruin Course of the Kings Island Golf Center in Mason, it came into jeopardy in 2016 when torrential rains combined with vehicular traffic forced us to cancel it. Ultimately, the devastation to the course forced its closure and sent us seeking a new location for this event. Thanks to the wonderful people at Christ’s Church Mason, who do great service to the community and beyond, agreed to be a host sponsor to the meet by granting us access their property. This new location has allowed us to continue to carry on McCarty’s vision of hosting a quality meet in a “Primetime” atmosphere.
“Jay McCarty, who unfortunately passed away in 2012 right before the first ever ‘Primetime’ meet, had a dream and a vision of having this event,” Moeller Meet Director Charlie Lytle said. “His idea was to find a location that was great for both runners and fans alike with a festive and exciting environment, and I think we’ve been able to honor his vision. Jay specifically wanted a venue where the fans can see the runners without running around themselves. Both Kings Island and now Christ’s Church, fans can stay in one spot and see their runner 3-4 times.” Jay McCarty passed after a long battle with cancer. The varsity boys’ first place trophy is named in honor of him. The “McCarty Cup”.

Junior high races open the event at 5:00 p.m., giving young runners the opportunity to experience a marquee race. “It’s always good for young runners to come out and see
older runners, especially the high school kids; see how they run, how they prepare, and compete against other teams and themselves,” Lytle said.

As the sun sets on the course, anticipation for the “primetime” events continued to build as the varsity events compete under the night-time lights.

“The race is unique in the fact that it’s run at night under the lights,” Lytle said. “It’s grown into one of the largest regional meets here in the city, and is definitely a great way to start off the season competing with some very high quality teams. On August 23, the Primetime Invitational will have more athletes
actually getting playing time than all the sports who are typically billed as “Friday Night Lights!”
With Food Trucks, music, t-shirts and the comradery of thousands of runners and fans, this is an event unlike any other. And if you stay long enough there is even fireworks….well fireworks from Kings Island that is!
