Visual Arts

Since 2002, Moeller art students have earned on average over $2.5 million scholarships annually and are accepted into the globally top ranked art and design programs across the country. Centered around Design Thinking, the Visual Arts Department works one-on-one with students continually crafting and developing a program that positions them to go into any creative field. All courses are rooted in The Elements of Art and the Principles of Design, the alphabet and grammar – the structure of the visual arts. Throughout the Visual Arts curriculum, students learn to create, engage in higher order problem solving skills, and instill meaning into their works while employing and demonstrating their ability to use Design Thinking and The Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. Courses in the visual art require the pursuit of excellence and mastery.

Each course offered focuses on developing students’ visual communication skills. Through biweekly critiques, students learn to effectively analyze, discuss and defend their work, while providing thoughtful and constructive feedback to their peers. Students learn how to make art but will, just as importantly, learn to understand and be able to explain their work and that of other artists.

Through each course, the department works towards enabling students to develop a strong sense of curiosity and work ethic. By doing so, students learn to become a disciplined artist and real-world problem solver in order to create works of art that clearly reflect their thoughts, feelings, and intentions.
