INTENTIONAL CURRICULUM AND
REAL-WORLD ENGAGEMENT

Grounded in Moeller’s educational philosophy of REALearning—Relational, Experiential, and Authentic—the Burns Innovation Hub is a dynamic space for hands-on, interdisciplinary learning. This new environment enhances existing courses and expands opportunities for students to develop confidence, creativity, and adaptability.

With courses in entrepreneurship, design thinking, prototyping, investment portfolio management, multimedia production, and human-computer interaction, students can explore their interests while working with cutting-edge technology in state-of-the-art labs and collaborative spaces. More than just a place for innovation, the Hub fosters 21st-century skills through a curriculum shaped by Marianist values, inspiring students to become forward-thinking problem solvers.

RELATIONAL

YOUNG MEN RESPOND AND LEARN WHEN A GENUINE, TRUSTING RELATIONSHIP IS BUILT BETWEEN THE STUDENT AND HIS TEACHERS.

Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential for students as they prepare for their future careers. In Negotiations and Advanced Rhetoric—students explore the art of negotiation through real-world scenarios, from venture capital deals to international diplomacy and public policy discussions. As they navigate increasingly complex challenges, they develop skills in rhetoric, teamwork, and strategic decision-making. Emphasizing the value of diverse perspectives, the course encourages students to analyze needs, critique ideas, and work toward thoughtful, effective solutions. Each negotiation simulation concludes with a class debrief, allowing students to reflect on their performance and growth in a supportive learning environment.

EXPERIENTIAL

Veteran science teacher Mr. Dan Shannon designed the Molecular Biology Research course for students who are curious, determined, and eager to dive into real scientific discovery. This hands-on, research-driven course follows the Biochemistry Authentic Scientific Inquiry Laboratory (BASIL) curriculum, allowing students to explore proteins with known structures but unknown functions—studying molecules that have never been characterized before.  Using a combination of 3D modeling, in vitro, in vivo, and in silico techniques, students apply cutting-edge methods to uncover new scientific insights. More than just a lab course, this experience reflects Moeller’s commitment to innovative learning—where young men engage in exploration, apply knowledge in real-world contexts, and learn alongside teachers who guide and inspire them.

YOUNG MEN LEARN BEST WHEN THEY ARE IMMERSED, ACTIVE, AND INTERESTED IN THEIR CLASSROOM MATERIAL.

IT'S OUR EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY TO TEACH OUR STUDENTS WITH REALearning

AUTHENTIC

YOUNG MEN THRIVE IN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT IS CONNECTED TO THEIR INTERESTS AND CAREER ASPIRATIONS.

With guidance from Ms. Karen Tlucek and alumni experts, students take on the role of Wall Street analysts, applying real-world financial and investment principles. Using Morningstar Direct, they analyze market sectors, financial statements, and key economic indicators to assess company performance and investment opportunities. In spring 2025, Moeller launched the nation’s largest student-run high school endowment, guided by ethical investment principles from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Inspired by the University of Dayton’s Flyer Investments Fund, students research S&P sectors and present data-driven investment pitches to an Advisory Board, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in finance and ethical decision-making.
